RQTH, disabled worker status in France: what it does and how to get it

Updated · 6 min read · Written by L'équipe DossierMalin

The short answer

RQTH status recognises that your health limits your ability to work. It gives you the right to workplace adjustments and employment support. You apply yourself to the MDPH with the single form. It is granted for 1 to 10 years, or for life, and you do not have to tell your employer.

What RQTH is

RQTH (reconnaissance de la qualité de travailleur handicapé) is a decision by the MDPH. It concerns people whose ability to work is reduced by an impairment of at least one physical, sensory, mental or psychological function (Service-Public).

Many people may qualify without knowing it, for example with a chronic illness, a mental health condition, a neurodevelopmental condition or the after-effects of cancer. The MDPH decides.

What it gives you

According to Service-Public:

  • adjustments to your job or working hours, and adapted equipment;
  • access to employment schemes: supported employment, rehabilitation placements, apprenticeships, adjusted civil service exams;
  • being counted in companies’ legal obligation to employ disabled workers;
  • a doubled notice period if you are dismissed, up to 3 months.

What it does not change

  • You do not have to tell your employer, either to work or to train.
  • It changes neither your salary nor your contract.
  • On its own, it does not give a right to early retirement.

Who can apply

You, from age 16 (15 for an apprenticeship), or your legal representative. Your employer cannot apply for you (Service-Public).

How to apply

  1. Fill in the MDPH form (CERFA 15692): part A, part B to describe your daily life, and RQTH in part E. Part D, about your work situation, helps the MDPH understand your needs at work.
  2. Attach the medical certificate (less than a year old), your ID document and proof of address.
  3. Send the application to the MDPH, online or by post.

On page 4, the form offers a simplified procedure for RQTH. It can be quicker, but you will not be able to be heard by the CDAPH.

If you apply for the AAH, for the first time or as a renewal, RQTH is reviewed automatically.

Timing and length

  • The CDAPH replies within 4 months. With no reply, the application is treated as refused.
  • RQTH is granted for 1 to 10 years, or for life if the disability cannot improve.
  • Renewal is not automatic: apply 4 months before the end. Applying extends your RQTH until the decision (Service-Public). See renewing MDPH rights.

If you are refused

You have 2 months for an administrative appeal to the MDPH, then 2 months to go to the administrative court (Service-Public). See our guide to challenging an MDPH decision, with a sample letter.
